Ziwa rhino sanctuary

A private animal sanctuary in Uganda located in the Nakasongola district, harboring the northern white rhinos that were re-introduced in 2005. the 70kmsq wildlife ranch is the only place in Uganda where you can see these endangered creatures feeding in the wild on foot. The sanctuary has become popular due to its viable adventures such as rhino trekking, birding, camping, night nature walks, and canoeing.

Its location enables travelers to attach it to the travel plan to or from Murchison falls national park and Kidepo valley national park.

 

 

Things to do in Ziwa rhino sanctuary

 

 

Rhino trekking

This is the most attractive activity in this sanctuary, walk on foot with trained ranger guides to see these animals closer to you. These rhinos walk anywhere in the sanctuary and this requires driving to the starting point. Have a safety briefing from the ranger guide and later proceed to the awaited creatures, this experience takes 1-2 hours depending on where they are located. It’s a wildlife bonanza while at the sanctuary, enjoy seeing the signalisers-warthogs, bushbucks, pangolins, kobs, monkeys, and many others.

 

 

Birding

Enjoy over 300 bird species in swamps, Savannah, and woodlands while at the wildlife sanctuary, have the best treat as you listen, record, call, and see these eves.

Bushshrikes, weavers, Hornbills, eagles not forgetting the mighty Shoebill, and many others are expected to be in and around the sanctuary.

 

 

Night and day nature walks

Have a detailed nature exploration as you walk during the day or night depending on your convenience. This can be done early morning, after lunch, or late evening for night experiences.

The day is key for all nature lovers having the best touch of flora and fauna being led by the ranger guide. Carry your cameras, long pants, sunhats, binoculars, and drinking water as you go for a walk. The night is key for night dwellers, like the pangolins and many others.

 

 

Getting to Ziwa rhino sanctuary.

by road and by air is all possible however the easiest way to drive from Kampala to the sanctuary for about 4 hours, is via luwero the home of fresh fruits.

by air, one flies to Pakuba airstrip in Murchison Falls and combines both areas, Murchison falls national park and Ziwa,
